If we could see into the future Bradley, how sci-fi would it look? Would it likely inspire optimism and anticipation or dread and anxiety?

Sci-fi has been exploring the rise of artificial intelligence for decades, and I think the genre has shown potential for both dystopia and utopia. However, if you pick these books and films apart, you'll find that society in the future will have tradeoffs, much like today. Perhaps one of the best examples of this is Logan's Run, in which a utopian society exists, but everyone over a certain age must die.

Oh wow, a Logan's Run reference! That takes me way, way back in the time machine. :) What you wrote and say is more nuanced than most who forecast the future: there will be tradeoffs. Makes sense. Will be interesting to see if the benefits > the costs, if we are overall better off as a society and how extreme the tradeoffs show themselves to be. Thank you for the article and reply.

Logan's Run is a classic! You should check out The Creator (2023), if you haven't already. I think the biggest question is whether we democratize AI and deploy it for the public good or leave it in the hands of the few. The latter would likely create a more dystopian future, and we only need to look at social media for a good reference point.

Thank you for the recommendation on The Creator. I will make certain to check it out. You make a critical point about AI and democratization. The technology definitely needs to be as you recommend and I agree about the dangers of leaving it in the hands of the few. The social media comparison is a smart one. Hopefully, we will learn from history. Let's see. :)

Also, I highly recommend looking at what Yuval Harari has written and said on the subject. He's prolific. Thank you for being a subscriber and for your thoughtful comments.
